Why Bad Ischl is the best starting point

Our watercolor map makes this clear at a glance: from here you can extend in all directions, often even faster than driving!

1. Bad Ischl: Royal Villa and Zauner Candy Shop

Before you explore the surrounding area, happiness awaits you right at your doorstep. The summer palace of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) — the Imperial Palace —is just a short walk away. Afterwards, be sure to visit the Zauner Pastry Shop—sample a slice of their famous Zauner cake or one of their many other cakes, as if stepping back into the imperial era.

2. Heading south: Hallstatt and Lake Gosau

Hallstatt, arguably Austria's most famous town, is easily accessible from here. You can cross Lake Hallstatt by train and boat in just 40 minutes to reach this UNESCO World Heritage site, enjoying breathtaking views along the way. For a more expansive exploration of the Alps, take a bus directly to Lake Gosau, where panoramic views of the majestic Dachstein Mountains await.

3. Western Romanticism: St. Wolfgang and Schaffberg

4. The seaside promenade in the northeast: Gmunden

Taking the train in the opposite direction, it takes about 40 minutes to reach Gmunden You can stroll along the lakeside promenade of Lake Traun, visit Ort Castle , or continue to Vienna—Bad Ischl is very conveniently connected to the Western Railway.
